From early 2024, stronger controls on the importation, manufacture, advertising, supply and commercial possession of all e‑cigarette devices and components (with and without nicotine) are being implemented by the Australian Government. These regulatory changes are being implemented by the Federal Government in stages during 2024 in partnership with State and Territory Governments (TGA 2023). Researchers said that the results show e-cigarettes may confer as much as or potentially even more harm to users and especially patients at risk for vascular disease. Results showed that total cholesterol and LDL or “bad” cholesterol was higher in sole e-cigarette users compared to nonsmokers.

This was especially the case for people aged 14 to 17 (74%) and 18 to 24 (68%). The 2022–‍2023 NDSHS was conducted before these restrictions were put into place. At the time, in most jurisdictions, it was legal for adults to purchase e‑cigarettes that did not contain nicotine from a broad range of retail settings, including those used to purchase tobacco products. Prior to 2024, adults could also import nicotine e‑cigarettes with a prescription via the personal importation scheme. The first study found that vaping can worsen several heart disease risk factors at levels equal to tobacco cigarettes, while the second found that e-cigarettes decrease blood flow in the heart even more than tobacco cigarettes. However, e-cigarettes still pose health risks, even without nicotine.

This guidance is intended to support healthcare providers in their understanding and tracking of -cigarette and vaping product use. 20% (5 million) of all youth use e-cigarettes, a 135% increase in just two years. Additional data, rates and trends can be found in the American Lung Association’s Tobacco Trends Brief.

Taken together, the studies provide strong evidence that an interactive, tailored text message program can help teens and their older peers break free from nicotine addiction. These findings are especially important given the recent youth mental health crisis documented by the U.S. Adolescents in this study were characterized by high severity of past-year problems with depression, sleep, anxiety, trauma, and substance use. In addition, moderate to high levels of nicotine dependence were observed across multiple measures, with more than three-quarters (76.2%) of teens vaping within 30 minutes of waking — a common way to measure addiction.
